I was attracted to the Standard
Wirehaired Dachshund breed after
seeing a few of them at dog shows. Researching,
I found they are odourless, hardy, vigorous, affectionate and responsive.
They are very companionable, hilarious in play, alert watchdogs, and
intrepid hunters. We acquired our first standard
wire-haired dachshund, Hickory, in 1990.
At the time we were exhibiting and breeding Japanese Akitas and wanted a
smaller dog to take to shows, as well as to have a non-allergenic
housedog. When Hickory died at the age of 13, it didn't take us long to
realize we really missed her companionship and the unique characteristics
of the breed.
I
started a hunt for another SWH and discovered how
difficult they were to find.
I put our names on waiting lists with two breeders and we were sent Koko
- a chocolate, from Betty Davis at Deebardac Kennels. Koko quickly established herself as Hal's dog.
A
year later we were very fortunate in acquiring Gillie and Ginger from
Lindy Wiebe at Withensea
Kennels. Both the
"G-girls" attained their Canadian Championships quickly and are
litter sisters to multi-Group and BISS winner and #1 SWH Dachshund in
Canada 2004 - Ch. Withensea Pippin Reid - owned by Janet Rein.
We
just started training for tracking with Koko and Gillie.
This is a new experience for us and a great way to have fun with dogs!
